Castle Rock Companion - Misery

Introducing a new video series!  I had originally planned to do this as a marathon for October, a special lead in to Halloween.  But then inspiration struck - instead of killing myself trying to read all those books and short stories in one year, I could make it a series and give each one the proper attention it deserves.  There are so many adaptations out there and even more in development that this series should be going for a long time.  I hope you enjoy it!

If you missed the Harry Potter entries I mention in the video, they can be viewed through my Harry Potter tag.

  1. I just realized I haven't seen Misery. Huh. I need to fix that. I did just re-read it, and I wonder- did your copy come with the internal cover for the Misery book? The one with a hilarious Stephen King-a-like on it?

  2. Sadly, no. :( My old one did, but I traded it in to the used bookstore ages ago. I LOVE that cover!

First of all, great hair! =D

So you have a tradition of renting the movie after seeing the book? I never would have guessed. ;-)

I haven't read Misery yet, but I've seen the movie several times and actually think it's better than The Shining.

As for authors "murdering" their characters . . . Well, who else would have the right, aye? =P But seriously, King has also created the only characters I have ever mourned over--and they didn't even die in his story! When I finished Christine, I was truly upset that I would not be able to Google Dennis and Leigh, to find out what they were up to these days. The thought that they were fictional was like a punch in the gut.

That's a good point about Annie not caring about the rest of the world. Well spotted!

Angie, this is a seriously good vlog review. It's well-written and well-edited, and it has cats! LOL! I'm really busy these days, but I wish I had made the time to watch it earlier. =)

    1. Thank you! It is a pain to style these days, so I greatly appreciate the appreciation for it! ;)

You must read it! I'm reading a lot of King right now, obviously, and of the ones I've re-read through so far this one is still standing out as the best.

I totally know what you mean! I still haven't gotten to Christine yet (but with a movie adaptation out there, it is on the list) but I have had books where I didn't want them to end because I wanted to know what was up with the characters.

It's a small complaint for an otherwise great movie, but it is our job as critics to point these things out, right? :)

Thank you so much! And yes, there will pretty much always be cats. I've started work on the next one (well, I had until I lost power) and there is a shot or two where you can see their tails behind me. They make their presence known. :)

  4. Man, oh man...that foot-chopping scene...

I first read that novel in high school, before the movie came out, and here's my most vivid memory of it: I had a test in one of my classes, and I finished early, so I turned the test in and then dragged out my copy of "Misery." So I'm sitting there reading it for the first time, no clue what's going to happen, and the foot-chopping scene happens. I was genuinely shocked by it, and I made some sort of involuntary "AIIEEE!" noise, and the teacher hollered "Burnette!" at me. Everyone in class laughed. And I don't blame them; it was pretty funny.

Chastened, I went back to reading, and get to the second chop, and had the self-possession to be able to stifle my "AIIEEE!" and turn it into a cough. Had to do it again when the cauterization happened.

So when I think of "Misery," THAT'S typically the first thing to come to mind. It's a pretty fine memory, actually.

    1. What a great memory! While I spent a lot of time reading King in spare moments at school as well, I think I did manage to hold my tongue through it all. Though I imagine I made some interesting faces from time to time. :)
